Police lieutenant teaching first responder interview techniques

Meet Gene Bachonski

Founder of The Watch Commander™ Academy

Welcome:

For over 25 years, I served as a police officer and ultimately as a Lieutenant at the Toms River Police Department in NJ. I was an Ocean County NJ Police Academy instructor and was recently hired as an adjunct instructor with the Palm Beach FL Police Academy.  I’ve sat on interview panels, reviewed candidate files, ran scenario assessments, and watched hundreds of applicants succeed and many others fail for reasons that had nothing to do with their qualifications.

The truth is simple:

Most first responder candidates don’t fail because they’re unprepared.
They fail because they prepare for the wrong things.

After retiring, I dove deeper into my passion of being an instructor and coach, helping applicants and future recruits navigate the hiring process with confidence, structure, and clarity. What began as one-on-one coaching quickly grew into something bigger — candidates needed more than a single mock interview or a list of questions. They needed a complete system, updated scenarios, real-world insight, and a clear method to build powerful, authentic answers and a COMMUNITY!

So I built it.

The Watch Commander™ Academy was created to give every candidate — police, fire, EMS, dispatch, corrections — the same level of training and insight I gave to my own recruits.

Inside the Academy. I teach you:

  • How interview panels think (I know this because I have interview 100s of candidates)

  • How to structure powerful answers using the W.A.T.C.H. Method™

  • How to respond under pressure

  • How to stand out as a confident, ethical, emotionally mature professional

  • And how to walk into the room prepared for their questions — not generic internet lists

My mission is simple:

To prepare the next generation of first responders to be confident, capable, and ready.

If you're serious about getting hired — and stepping into a career that will define your future — I'm here to guide you every step of the way.

Thanks for being here.
